The brown duffle bags are “vegetable tanned leather.” After tanning, there are residue oil spots. The oil treatment is to protect the leather. In the final stage, the hides are sprayed with waxes and a sealant for protection. Leaving oil stains inside the green canvas. This can not be avoided as each bag is hand treated before shipment.
Vegetable tanned leather is a product of animal origin, generally bovine, ovine or caprine hides, by-products of the food industry. In order to make them suitable for craftsmanship, the hides are subjected to tanning, a process capable of stopping their decay and making the leather resistant to wetting, supple and pleasant.
It is defined as “vegetable” because the substances used in tanning (the so-called “tanning agents”) are tannins, natural extracts derived exclusively from vegetable sources such as chestnut and quebracho wood, gall nuts or tara pods.
Vegetable tanning is perhaps the form of tanning that produces the sturdiest leather. It is more sustainable, of a higher quality and gets better with age. It provides great value for money due to its durability.
One of the best features of vegetable-tanned leather is that it develops a patina over time with prolonged use and exposure to the environment. (In other words your bag looks better overtime)
Due to the gentle processes involving several weeks of treatment, the vegetable-tanned leather has a much longer life than chrome-tanned leather.
It is also a fashion classic that never goes out of style.
If you notice your leather starts to dry out, We recommend using a leather conditioning oil. This will hydrate the leather of your bag. Before shipping we treat your bag with leather conditioning so no worries you have a great starting point.
